Hinton wrote about the upheaval she saw around her as a teenager, capturing the division between the haves and the have-nots so perfectly that her book quickly became one of the best-selling novels for young adults. The Outsiders has been alternately praised and banned throughout its 40-year history.
In 1983, it was made into a movie starring C. Thomas Howell and Ralph Macchio, as well as a number of other now-big names.
